I'm kind of in the opposite camp. I supported the idea of the merger initially, based largely on my faith in Susan Sarfati to make dreams become reality. I have been part of a number of GWSAE projects and strategic retreats and simply put - believe in Susan and the team she's built.

However, as I've listened to the dialogue of trusted peers - not the rantings of USAE - my position has wavered.

The bottom line for many is not whether we trust GWSAE to make something work, but whether we think ASAE will.

I've received numerous communications - group and personal from Susan and her staff over the past several months. I've had trouble getting return phone calls from ASAE when calling about membership issues (non-merger related).

It's easy for me to think "well, I'm more involved with GWSAE, and most of the staff there know me - that's why" - but I'm as involved with ASAE, if not more.

And as to the staff, when you talk to the GWSAE staff, they are excited and thrilled - the ASAE staff seem to be depressed and in many cases fatalistic. Why is that?

So the question is in this merger, which culture will prevail? My hope has always been that the GWSAE culture and style would dominate the merged organization - positive energy works that way - and ASAE might find its stride again.

I think there are far too many people that question this outcome and aren't willing to risk losing what they have in GWSAE for what may, perhaps, someday, be possible with the ASAE merger.

It's unfortunate in a sense, that the vendor community, as the market who may eventually benefit the most from this merger, don't get to vote on the issue. Many association executives that I have talked with feel there's no true benefit to them and lots to lose. As a member of both, I will pay less dues total, I suppose, but as my association pay them, it doesn't really affect me personally.

I'm still on the fence - and plan to talk to a broader range of people tonight before casting my vote. I'm still in favor, but not by nearly as much as I had been.

I think it will be a big demoralizer if the vote does not pass, and that, if nothing else, would be unfortunate.

Jeff,

I appreciate your evolving viewpoint on this. As a leader in association innovation I am curious to know your ideas and how you come to them. Thanks for sharing.

Like you I think this is a step forward for innovation. I have great hopes for new developments that will envigorate the association world and enable its contribution to the private and public sectors.

best,
Seth

Jeff:
Thank you for sharing your personal struggle over this issue. Although I have always supported the idea of the merger, I acknowledge that others are strongly against it, or they had a long road of thought and "idea wrestling" to decide to support the merger. I have had great concerns over the years about the two organizations that are supposed to be leading the association community (ASAE & GWSAE) and felt that many resources were wasted in the competition between them. A merger has always made sense to me because the association community DESPERATELY needs to change. In order for significant change to happen, ASAE & GWSAE need to be reborn. This merger is the painful birthing process of what should be an outstanding offspring. As you stated in your letter, if it's not successful, we only have ourselves to blame.
Cecilia
