For some time now, I've been using the following quotation from former Czech Republic president and playwright Vaclav Havel in my presentations:
Vision is not enough, it must be combined with venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps, we must step up the stairs.
I love this quotation, not only because of what it means, but also that
it comes from a true leader rather than a business and management
guru. The link between vision and venture is particularly
important to the community I serve. Associations are very good at
articulating vision statements, but they are less good at venturing to
make those visions come true. The connection between vision and
venture is absolutely essential in the pursuit of innovation, and it is
one the daily innovator must live everyday.
Advice: take a look at the total picture of the work
you're doing today, this week or this month and try to identify where
the relationship between vision and venture is at its strongest.
Look for common characteristics among these projects so you can use
them to understand how you like to innovate and also as a filter for
other opportunities that might emerge.
